Planning a trip to East Africa can be a thrilling experience and having the right visa is a crucial part of your travel preparations.
The East Africa Tourist Visa (EATV) is a 90-day, multiple-entry visa that covers Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda for a single fee of US$100. It’s a good option if your trip combines two or more of these countries, such as a Kenya safari followed by gorilla trekking in Uganda. Tanzania, including Zanzibar, is not part of the scheme.
East Africa Visa Application: A Guide to Simplified Travel
The document you need depends on where you’re going:
- Kenya only: Kenya stopped issuing tourist visas in January 2024. Most visitors now apply online for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) at etakenya.go.ke before they travel. The UK government advises applying at least two weeks before departure. Most African nationals are exempt.
- Kenya travel health insurance: Since October 2026, most visitors to Kenya must also buy Kenyan Government travel health insurance, usually as part of the eTA application. Policies from other insurers are not accepted in its place, so keep your own travel insurance as well.
- Kenya with Uganda and/or Rwanda: The East Africa Tourist Visa covers all three. Apply online through the immigration portal of the country you will enter first, for example Uganda’s visas.immigration.go.ug. Check before you fly whether you also need to complete Kenya’s eTA or insurance steps.
- Tanzania and Zanzibar: Tanzania requires its own visa, applied for online at visa.immigration.go.tz, plus mandatory Tanzanian Government inbound travel insurance.

What to Expect From Your East Africa Tourist Visa
Once your East Africa Tourist Visa is approved, keep these points in mind:
- Validity: The visa lasts 90 days and cannot be extended or converted to another visa type.
- Multiple entries: You can move between Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda as often as you like within the 90 days, but your first entry must be into the country that issued the visa.
- Passport: Your passport should be valid for at least six months after you arrive, with at least two blank pages.
- Health: You may need a yellow fever vaccination certificate, depending on where you are travelling from.
- On arrival: You may be asked for proof of onward travel, accommodation and sufficient funds.
