7 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Climb: Machame (Whiskey) Route

The Machame Route, also known as the “Whiskey Route”, starts on the southwestern side of Mount Kilimanjaro and is widely considered one of the best ways to reach the summit. Over seven days it crosses rainforest, moorland, the Shira Plateau, Lava Tower and the Barranco Wall.

The seven-day version adds a night at Karanga Camp before the summit push. It follows the mountaineering rule of “climb high, sleep low”, and the extra day of acclimatisation gives an 80–85% summit success rate.

Route Machame (Whiskey) Route, descending via Mweka
Highest point Uhuru Peak, 5,895m

Details

Drive from Moshi to Machame Gate (1,800m). After registration, begin trekking through dense tropical rainforest rich with birdlife and primates. The trail climbs steadily for 5–6 hours to Machame Camp (2,835m) on the edge of the moorland zone.

Leave the rainforest and climb through moorland and heather to the Shira Plateau. The 5–6 hour trek crosses a rocky ridge with increasingly wide views, arriving at Shira Camp (3,840m) on the volcanic plateau beneath the western face of Kibo.

A key acclimatisation day. Trek east to the Lava Tower (4,630m), a volcanic rock pinnacle, where you stop for a hot lunch, then descend steeply to Barranco Camp (3,950m). You finish at almost the same altitude you started at, but climbing to 4,630m and coming back down helps your body adjust.

Start the day with the Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical scramble up a 257-metre rock face and one of the most memorable parts of the climb. Continue across several valleys to Karanga Camp (3,995m) for lunch and an afternoon of rest.

A shorter 3–4 hour trek (3.3km) across barren alpine desert to summit base camp at Barafu (4,640m). Arrive by lunchtime, then rest and hydrate through the afternoon. Your guide will brief you on the summit attempt. Eat an early dinner and try to sleep before the midnight wake-up call.

Set off at midnight by head torch, climbing steeply through volcanic scree to Stella Point (5,756m) on the crater rim, arriving around sunrise. Continue for about 45 minutes to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the Roof of Africa.

After summit photos, descend to Barafu for lunch and a short rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp (3,100m). This is a demanding 12–16 hour day, gaining around 1,250m and then losing almost 2,800m. Gaiters and trekking poles are strongly recommended for the loose gravel and volcanic ash. Enjoy your last evening on the mountain.

A final 3–4 hour descent through rainforest to Mweka Gate (1,640m). Collect your summit certificate, say goodbye to your mountain crew and transfer to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.
